Happy Homemaker Monday 6/26/23

Summer vacation for the kids is in full swing so having a few moments to blog are harder to come by these days.  We're enjoying the less scheduled days and spending time together.  I'm so happy to be able to join in this week on the Happy Homemaker Monday posts done by Sandra over at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom

The Weather:::

 Today started out sunny and humid and has now turned to rain.

It's very dark for 4pm in June as the rainstorms have fully arrived.

We took a walk with friends and one of them caught
this bullfrog.  Fun for all the kids to see.

 Highlight from last week:::
 Being able to go on a fun walk with friends was definitely a highlight.  Another highlight was going Strawberry picking with my sister and some of her kids.

Bible verse, Devotional, Quote:::
In the message this past Sunday we were studying the passage in Matthew 7 where Jesus warns of false prophets.  Our pastor made the following statement: "God doesn't squeeze into culture; God changes culture."  May we be bold ambassadors going into the dark places in our world to shine God's light into the culture around us; not shrinking back into our comfortable spaces but reaching out that we might "have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire;" Jude 1:22-23a

 Highlight from last week:::
 One of the other Happy Homemaker posts included a section for a highlight from the last week.  I love this idea so I'll be incorporating this from now on.

So, my highlight from last week would be from Sunday, the 4th.  We had my daughter's graduation party and it was so wonderful to see her with her friends and to celebrate all her accomplishments.

Bible verse, Devotional, Quote:::
The book I mention above; The Shift, is about a woman in Canada who starts a ministry to the homeless.  This quote struck me as so powerful; this takes place as they are just starting the outreach:

"Before lights out, as people were bedding down, we prayed a children's
bedtime prayer, "Now I lay me down to sleep..." I was astonished.  Almost
every person in that room sat up in their makeshift beds and joined us in the prayer.
I'm not sure what shook me most -- that they responded to receiving prayer, or
that most of them knew it."

In a world where the thinking is often "us vs. them" we need to remember that everyone was once a child, everyone is loved by God and needs Him.  Everything you teach your children about God is important; don't ever think your children are too small to learn about God or underestimate how He may use something in their life.  Who knows how long it had been since the people in that room had heard or said that simple prayer, yet they knew it and responded.  For many, it was the start of a connection with the people in the ministry.

Busy, Busy, Busy

 The title sums up our last few weeks. Between senior events for our oldest daughter; such as honors night, prom, graduation, graduation party (where we hosted almost 100 people in our home).  Along, with our youngest daughter's end of year Kingergarten show, some tough issues that have popped up for another one of our kids, continuing renovations, a last minute family trip to D.C. and life in general...we have been busy! While I've been keeping up with reading through the Bible many days I've felt rushed rather than relaxing and truly focusing on my time with God.

This morning, while praying about some things, I was prompted to get back into the new devotional I started titled "Having a Mary Heart In A Martha World".  I read the first chapter a week or so ago and did a couple of the study questions but had not finished all the questions.  God knew I needed this lesson today!

A few quotes from the first chapter that I wrote down are:

"Busyness, by itself, breeds distraction."

"In her eagerness to serve Jesus, she almost missed the opportunity to know Jesus."

"While the world applauds achievement, God desires companionship."

So, today, like Mary, I chose the "better part" and here are a few of the blessings I was given at the feet of Jesus.

One of the final questions was to read Matthew 11:28-30 and circle any key words.  Not only did I circle them I also chose to look up the original Greek used.  I love looking into the original words as it tends to give me a richer understanding of what the passage is saying.  For example, in these verses there are two Greek words used for rest.

After looking up the meanings in Greek I will often rewrite the verse in my notes with the expanded definitions in brackets. This was such an encouragement to me and reminder to keep my focus on Christ, on the things that are eternally useful and to rest in Him!

"Come to me, all who [labor until worn out] and are [loaded down, burdened] and I will give you [refreshment for your soul].  Take my [bar that unites us in work] upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and [lowly in spirit relying on God] and you will find [blessed tranquility of soul].  For my yoke is [good, eternally useful] and my burden is [easy to bear, not burdensome]."

Life gets busy and it's easy to get distracted from what really matters, thinking we don't have time.  I'd encourage you today to take time with the Savior, you will be refreshed and leave that time with a new focus, peace and thankfulness.
